Mare Shows

At the mare show, conformation as well as walk and trot in hand are judged.

At the mare show, three to six-year-old mares of particularly high quality are awarded candidacies for the Hanoverian Premium. The mares are entered in one of the Hanoverian Society’s studbooks at a mare show.

Mare shows

The mare shows, which are organized and held by the regional societies and horse breeding clubs, are a showcase for the breed. At the mare show, conformation as well as walk and trot in hand are judged on the triangle. At most events, the mares are also judged on hard ground and in free-running.

At the mare show, three to six-year-old mares of particularly high quality are awarded candidacies for the Hanoverian Premium. For jumping mares, free jumping can also be offered, as the free jumping must be assessed in order to acquire the Hanoverian Premium candidacy. Jumping mares that have already been judged in a mare performance test or free jumping competition may be shown in free jumping at the mare show, but are not obliged to do so

Registration for the mare show

Registrations for the dates should be made four weeks in advance to the addresses given, preferably by email.

  • Each newly registered mare will be listed as an active broodmare and assessed for the following year’s fee if no written notice of cancellation is received by December 30 of that year at the latest.
  • The provisions of the breeding programs apply.

The entry results for individual shows may lead to changes in the times.

Class division

The mares are divided into different show classes:

  • Three-year-old main studbook mares
    • I Division with mare performance test results
    • II Division without mare performance test results
  • Four-year-old main studbook mares
  • Five-year-old main studbook mares
  • Six-year-old main studbook mares
  • Mare families

Three-year-old and older mares are only eligible for a show if they have already been entered in the main studbook or will be entered at the mare show at the latest. At larger mare shows, special classes for jumping mares and half-blood mares are offered across all age groups.

Procedure

Similar to the mare studbook inspection, the mares are assessed in walk and trot on the triangle and should be prepared accordingly. Their conformation is also evaluated while standing. At some events, the mares are additionally inspected on hard ground and assessed in free-running. In the subsequent walking ring, the mares are compared with each other and ranked.

No scores are awarded, but they can receive a Premium Candidacy. Finally, the mares are commented on by a member of the evaluation commission. At the end of the event, the best mares in each class compete for the title of winning mare.

Herwart von der Decken-Show

The Herwart von der Decken show is the Verband’s annual main mare show and is the highlight of the show season. The free jumping under the open sky for the jumping mares is the specialty of this show event. The best three- and four-year-old Hanoverian and Rhinelander premium candidate mares meet in Verden during the first week of August to crown the best young mares. Four-year-old mares can take part, if they have passed a mare performance test and have not already been shown at the Herwart von der Decken Show as three-year-olds

Prizes will be awarded to:

  • Champion mare dressage
  • Reserve champion mare dressage
  • Champion mare show jumping
  • Reserve champion mare jumping
  • Best halfbred mare

Every four years, mare families are also exhibited. The best family is honored with the Herwart von der Decken Prize.

The Herwart von der Decken-Show has become more and more important in the last few years and is meanwhile visited by international guests, too. It has been named after the long-time chairman of the Hanoverian Society, Herwart von der Decken.
