In the mare performance test, the basic gaits under the rider, rideability and free jumping of the mares are judged. It is an important selection stage in the Hanoverian Society’s breeding program.
The Hanoverian Society gives great importance to mare performance tests. They are not only an indication of the mare’s suitability as a riding horse, but are also valuable as offspring information about the sires. The results serve as the basis for the Hanoverian Society’s breeding value estimation.
In the mare performance test, the basic gaits, the jumping ability during free jumping and rideability are evaluated by the group of judges under their own rider and a test rider. Free jumping is optional for dressage mares.
The individual criteria are evaluated in half scores. The score scale from 0 (= not suitable) to 10 (= excellent) is available. In the final certificate, partial scores are awarded for basic gaits, rideability and jumping. In addition, the mares are described linear in the individual criteria for the mare performance test. A single repetition of the test is possible. The result of the second test counts.
As an alternative to the own performance test at station, in the field or as a Hanoverian sport test, the performance test is also considered to have been passed if the mares can prove certain successes in show sport tests by the end of their fifth year. The sport test is carried out in the disciplines of dressage, jumping and eventing.

The Hanoverian Sport Test and the following award are open as a mare performance test for all mares of warmblood breeds recognized by the Hanoverian Society.
For four- to six-year-old dressage and show jumping horses, the sport test is performed in a novice class dressage or show jumping test. In the eventing discipline, the Hanoverian sport test consists of a suitability test with cross-country obstacles.
The mares are evaluated by two panels of judges. The breeding judges gain an impression of the basic gaits and rideability during the presentation of the mare in the test. The suitability is reflected in the basic score for the performance during the test, which is awarded by the judges of the competition test. In the dressage and eventing disciplines, the sport test is directly incorporated into the competition test. In the show jumping course, the mares are first presented in trot and then the walk on the long reins is assessed before the mare leaves the arena. The assessment of suitability can be replaced by a result from a show jumping, dressage or aptitude test of at least equal value from the same year. If the mares have not yet been registered in the Hanoverian Society studbook, the sport test offers the possibility of a studbook inspection following the test. In addition, mares with the appropriate quality can receive the Hanoverian Premium.
Test dates in Germany and addresses where the mares can be registered can be found under dates. The registration forms and the entry fee of 35,- Euro have to be sent to the respective organizer at least four weeks before the test. The horse passport of your mare must be presented on the day of the test.
Admitted are three-year-old and older mares, which are registered in the studbook of the Verband or will be registered at the latest on the day of the test. If mares are not to be inspected on the day of the test, a double test fee must be paid. The participation will be noted in the mare’s passport.
