The Hanoverian breeding area extended until 2006 over the states of Lower Saxony, Hesse and Schleswig-Holstein, the city states Hamburg and Bremen as well as smaller parts of territories, which border on these states. There were seven so called "Bezirksverbaende", which means district societies.
In 2007 the Hanoverian Verband focussed on its approval for all german breed areas. Foreign breeders from other countries who do not have subsidiaries of the Hanoverian Society in their countries, should have the chance to apply for a direct membership. For these breeders the district society "International" was established.
